day 7: home
sam was relieved to see her father return home early from work. being home alone no longer seemed like fun. her mother came home not long after.
"the company is closing down for now," sam's father said to his wife.
"mine too," she replied. "it seems that there aren't enough employees showing up to keep it running right now."
"everyone keeps getting sick..."
"what's everyone getting sick with, dad?" sam asked, inserting herself into the conversation.
her parents looked at each other, both unsure of what to say. finally her dad responded.
"there's a new disease that's infecting a lot of people," sam's father said. "to help keep it from spreading, a lot of stuff is being temporarily shut down."
"the news has said that staying at home is the best thing for now," her mother added. "so for the time being you need to stay in the house. okay, hon?"
"okay, mom."
the conversation was left at that. sam didn't want to talk about what she'd seen earlier. and she didn't want her parents knowing she'd left the house. she was so busy worrying about covering her own ass, sam didn't notice how tired her parents looked, or how pale their skin had become.
